Cold Brew

Over the past few years, Cold Brew has become one of the most popular orders at Snowy Owl. Unlike iced coffee that’s refrigerated or put over ice after being brewed with hot water, the Cold Brew method relies on cold water and time. In this case, slow and steady proves to win the race. The Cold Brew technique amplifies coffee’s creamy texture while reducing acidity and bitterness.  For a successful extraction, 12 hours is required. With that said, the vibrant full bodied beverage is worth waiting every minute for. Plus, with our recipe you’ll be delighted with the final yield of 40 ounces.

When it comes to making Cold Brew, there are a variety of devices you can use. So, if you don’t have a Cold Brew Coffee Maker on hand, an alternative solution is to use a French Press or a mason jar with a strainer. After preparing this recipe, we recommend making Pour Over with the remaining coffee beans. Contrasting the subtle nuances in flavor between methods is an exciting way to grow your appreciation for specialty coffee.

This recipe assumes you’re using a Cold Brew Coffee Maker. Start by measuring 5 ounces of coffee beans on your scale. Grind the coffee beans to a consistency similar to kosher salt. This grind size will support a long term extraction process. Remove the lid from your Cold Brew Coffee Maker and insert all of the grounds into the infuser. Slowly fill the carafe with 40 ounces of purified, room temperature water. Tighten the lid back onto the Cold Brew Coffee Maker and set in the fridge. For the next 12 hours, let your coffee steep. In the meantime, enjoy a delicious cup of pour over with your remaining coffee beans. After 12 hours have passed, retrieve your Cold Brew Coffee Maker from the fridge. Remove the infuser and discard the grounds. Pour cold brew over a glass of ice and enjoy! Store leftovers in the fridge for up to one week.
