México Oaxaca: Cerro La Bruja
México Oaxaca: Cerro La Bruja
With the support of our wonderful partners at Red Fox Coffee Merchants, we’re excited to share Cerro La Bruja (Witch's Hill), part one of our two-part, single-origin series from Oaxaca 🇲🇽.
This washed Pluma varietal comes from small landholder producers in San Vicente Yogondoy, a remote community where a new generation of Zapotec farmers continues to cultivate Pluma (a beloved local mutation of Typica that has thrived here for more than 80 years). After harvest, the coffee is carefully dried on petate mats, handwoven from palm leaves and used throughout the region for generations to dry coffee and grains under the sun.
“Cerro La Bruja,” or Hill of the Witch, takes its name from a nearby peak known for its dramatic electrical storms — nights when lightning flashes for hours, illuminating the forest in otherworldly hues. That same vibrant energy hums through this cup, with notes of date, cola, and fig cookie. This may be a light-medium roast, but lovers of fuller bodied coffee should not shy away.
Tis the season for a touch of spookiness, and Cerro La Bruja delivers in all the right ways — bold, bright, and a little mysterious.
